Chapter 10

Charles waited, so tense he was nearly vibrating with it. Would she come? Or was she going to call his bluff?

A soft knock sounded on his office door. “Yes?” he called out, turning away from the view of Lake Michigan spread out below his office window.

“I’m so sorry to disturb you, sir,” Abraham said in a rush. “But a woman says she is here to meet with you. She doesn’t have an appointment.”

Charles sighed. “Get rid of her,” he snapped. “I’m meeting…” he stopped, his eyes narrowing. “Wait. What does she look like?”

Abraham hesitated, his fingers gripping the door. “Curly dark hair, green eyes. She’s lovely sir, but your orders–”

Kate! A surge of satisfaction burned through him. “Bring her in. Immediately!”

Abraham cringed and Charles mentally sighed. He’d have to apologize to Abraham tomorrow. Charles knew he’d been in a foul mood all day. But he’d been wondering if Kate would show up. And at that moment, he realized that he’d been so consumed that he’d forgotten to warn Abraham that she was expected. Probably because Charles knew that there was no way to know what to expect from Kate. In his memory, she was a beautiful, freedom-loving butterfly that had come into his world and made everything light and happy.

But then she’d left. Even before she’d left his house, she’d left him. Mentally, she’d checked out, ignored him. After the first month of their marriage, she’d been nervous and tentative around him. Before they’d married and during their honeymoon, Kate had run to him whenever they’d been away from each other for more than a few hours. She’d literally thrown herself into his arms and whispered wonderfully wicked things into his ear. Things that she wanted him to do to her, as well as things that she was going to do in return. He’d loved that about her. She was so spontaneous and lusciously full of life, warmth, and happiness.

But all of that had petered out after they’d returned from Las Vegas. Kate had slowly turned cold and…confined. She’d retreated into her own world, a world he couldn’t break into. He’d tried to talk to her. He’d tried to tease her and bring back the lovely, vibrant woman he’d fallen in love with. But with every gesture, every teasing comment, she’d simply become colder, more distant. More reserved and detached.

Because Charles couldn’t face the fact that she’d fallen out of love with him, he’d taken to traveling more and more often. He figured that, if he wasn’t there to talk to, then she couldn’t tell him that she was leaving him.

What he hadn’t anticipated was her leaving anyway. That had been a devastating blow.

But now she was back. He felt himself tighten as he watched her walk into his office. Normally, he loved the way she walked, the fluid grace of her limbs, and the sultry, anticipatory way she watched him as she approached.

Unfortunately, that look was gone. Somehow, it had died. Had he killed her spirit? Had he
